We are raising funds for books and school supplies to use in our Engage Tuscaloosa program. This program allows honors students to work in the local schools and serve as valuable mentors for the students of Tuscaloosa. Through STEM, literacy, and character education programs, Engage Tuscaloosa has created a connection between the Honors College and the local community that has proven to benefit both the college students and the students of local schools.
The 4 components of Engage Tuscaloosa are:
- BRIGHT-introduces STEM concepts to pre-K and kindergarten students through interactive activities
- READ-fosters a love of reading in elementary age students
- DREAM-instill scholastic competence in middle school students and helps them develop pathways to success
- DRIVE-works with high school students to develop college and career readiness plan
Engage Tuscaloosa includes about 400-500 Honors College students who serve each week as mentors to children in local schools, from pre-school to high school. To support this work, we buy children’s books; school supplies such as crayons, folders, paper, etc; and recorders for a new music class. Our goal is $10,000.
