The Al’s Pals mentorship program connects UA students with local Tuscaloosa elementary students to help with homework, reinforce math and reading skills and participate in recreational activities. Al’s Pals provides University students with opportunities for leadership development, community engagement and intercultural learning while helping the city’s youngest scholars love to learn.
Offering Al’s Pals requires funding to cover costs like background checks for UA students, supplies, and events. Thanks to a generous match from Al’s Pals founder, Star Bloom, the first $5,000 of donations will be matched! Your contribution will help both mentors and mentees in Al’s Pals maximize their learning opportunities while improving the Tuscaloosa community as a whole.
Here are some examples of how your gift could be used:
- $5 covers hula hoops and outdoor activity kits (popular items for UA mentors to utilize with mentee students!)
- $10 covers a card game activity set
- $15 covers a kickball set
- $23 covers one UA student background check (required for their participation)
- $50 covers a classroom learning kit (flash cards, school supplies, etc.) for use in mentorship activities
- $75 covers a class set of mentor/mentee memento photos
- $100 covers an elementary student mentee’s visit to UA campus so they can envision themselves succeeding in college and beyond
- $150 covers an Al’s Pals classroom incentive party
- $250 covers a UA Al’s Pals team leader training
- $500 covers a UA Al’s Pals end-of-year celebration
