Celebrating a century of excellence, The University of Alabama Graduate School marks 100 years of providing transformative advanced education opportunities at the Capstone. Established in 1924, though offering graduate degrees since its inception in 1831, the Graduate School has been at the forefront of advanced education. UA awarded its first Master of Arts in 1835, just three years after the first bachelor's degree.
Today, the Graduate School supports over 150 master's, Educational Specialist, doctoral and certificate programs through its various colleges and schools. These programs prepare students for a wide array of careers in teaching, research, creative endeavors and service. The School's personnel work closely with departments to recruit and enroll a diverse student body that aligns with the University's broader enrollment goals.
In collaboration with other colleges and schools at the University, the Graduate School enhances the development of its teaching assistants and provides comprehensive professional development opportunities for students gearing up for various careers. This cooperative spirit has supported the recent growth in graduate enrollments, complemented by the University's advancement to Research-1 status, reflecting a broader increase in research activities.
