Our HES Bama Blitz passion project will support the Capstone Family Therapy Clinic. CFTC is an innovative research and training facility for graduate students with a concentration in marriage and family therapy and a therapeutic clinic that serves University of Alabama students and members of the surrounding community. The clinic provides systemic psychotherapy for individuals, couples and families, conducted by marriage and family therapy master’s level graduate students in training. These students are educated and closely supervised by faculty and staff who are licensed marriage and family therapists and nationally approved supervisors. The clinic utilizes a sliding fee scale to accommodate all income levels and provide quality mental health care to under-served populations.
Student interns are trained in evidence-based theoretical models specific to individuals, couples, and families with specific training including (but not limited to) the treatment of trauma in adults and children, play therapy, and culturally sensitive approaches to treatment.
“As a second-year student in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program, I have the privilege of treating a variety of [people with] clinical concerns including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, substance use, relationship issues, child-parent difficulties, and child/adolescent behavioral problems,” says Amber Holly. “This enables me to immerse myself in the actual work environment, gaining and applying required skills, and completing hands-on tasks directly connected to the profession.”
In order to expand the number of students trained and families served by the Capstone Family Therapy Clinic, we need additional funding for software, audio and visual recording equipment for the training and supervision of students, updates to the clinical space to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere to the clients we serve and updates to our play therapy space to provide the best care possible.
