For the 2022 Bama Blitz Passion Project Brewer Porch Children’s Center, housed under The College of Community Health Sciences, is seeking to create a large SMART gym and smaller SMART environments. The Sensory Motor Arousal Regulation Treatment (SMART) model is an evidence-informed therapy approach for youth who have experienced complex trauma. We are asking for your support with this project to help the children of Brewer Porch Children’s Center reach their intellectual, social and emotional potential through the SMART approach.
Brewer-Porch Children’s Center is a safe, nurturing place for children and adolescents that provides day treatment and residential programs for Alabama youths with mental health and behavioral disorders and helps them gain the skills needed to learn and grow.
Our goal is to raise at least $10,000 to kick-start this project. Your donation will help purchase all necessary equipment and supplies to create the SMART gym and smaller environment rooms. Within this model, therapists use a variety of therapeutic equipment including weighted blankets, balance beams, fitness balls and cushioned mats in shared play to support children’s natural ways of regulating their bodies.
The SMART approach was designed for children and adolescents who have experienced complex stress and traumatic exposures, which could be the result of explicit incidents of environmental, physical, and/or in-utero trauma. The aim of the SMART approach is to help children with emotional, behavioral and interpersonal regulation challenges that impact their functioning and engages their sensory-motor systems. The SMART approach also broadens the youth’s window of tolerance for both positive and negative emotional states, along with interpersonal connection.
With your generosity, Brewer-Porch Children’s Center will be able to purchase the necessary equipment and supplies to create the SMART gym and smaller SMART environment rooms. Please join us in reaching our goal to help further the Brewer Porch Children’s Center's mission and service to our children.
